TRANSFORMING CONSCIOUSNESS-Common Bibliography

  • REMINDER: HJAS does not include English translations of the titles of texts in bibliographic citations.

Citations should be made according to the Chicago Manual of Style (13th, 14th, or 15th eds.) modified for the Stylesheet of the Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies. For simple questions regarding Chicago Style, one may consult the Chicago Manual of Style Quick Guide.

Specific Exceptions:

  • For the names of Asian publishers and often-cited collectanea, use romanization without characters.
  • When citing Japanese-language books published in Japan, omit the place of publication if it is Tokyo.
  • When citing Asian-language material in footnotes, give author's name, followed by characters, and romanized title (followed by characters only if necessary) without English translation. Foreign language titles may be translated in the body of the text and then referred to consistently either by original or translated title. Use the following format: Huang Zongxi 黃 宗 羲, Mingru xue'an 明 儒 學 案 (Records of Ming scholars), Yingyin wenyuange Siku quanshu edition (Taipei: Taiwan shangwu yinshuguan, 1983).

Simple instructions for HTML for this page:

  • To render a title in italitcs, place two single inverted commas around the title.
    • Ex. ' 'Journal of Asian Studies' '.
  • Given the nature of formatting on this site, all entries should be preceded with an asterisk.
