如是我聞:一時佛在俱薩羅國漸次遊行,至舍衛城 祇樹給孤獨園


波斯匿王聞佛來至舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,往詣佛所,稽首問訊,在一面坐,而白佛言:

「世尊!我昔聞爾出家求道,要成無上至真等正覺。汝為實有如是語耶,將非他人謬傳者乎?為是譏嫌,致於毀呰,作此語也?」

佛告波斯匿言:

「如此語者,是真實語,非為毀呰,亦非增減。實是我語,實如法說,非非法說。一切外人,亦無有能譏嫌我者。」

波斯匿王復作是言:

「我雖聞爾有如此語,猶未能信。何故不信?自昔諸人有久出家,耆老宿舊諸婆羅門──富蘭那迦葉末伽梨俱賒梨子刪闍耶毘羅 * 邸子阿闍多翅舍欽婆羅迦據多迦栴延尼乾陀闍提弗多羅,彼諸宿舊尚自不信得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,況汝年少,而出家未久,而當得乎?」

佛言:

「 大王!世有四事小,不可輕。何者為四?一者、王 * 子雖小,最不可輕。二、龍子雖小,亦不可輕。三、火雖小,亦不可輕。四、比丘雖小,亦不可輕。」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

王者雖為小    具習諸技藝
生處既真正    亦不雜鄙穢
有大美名稱    一切悉聞知
如此雖言小    其實不可輕
欲護己命者    不應輕於小
剎利雖云小    法應紹王位
既紹王位已    法當行謫罰
是以應敬順    不宜生輕慢
於諸聚落中    及以閑靜處
若見小龍子    形狀雖微細
能大亦能小    亦復能興雲
降注於大雨    若以小故輕
必能縱毒螫    欲護身命者
不宜輕於彼    為於己利故
宜應自擁護    亦如有小 *
若具於眾緣    猛炎甚熾盛
* 遇於大暴風    能焚燒山野
既焚林野已    遇時還復生
欲護己命者    不應輕小火
若於淨戒所    惡口加罵辱
其身及子孫    一切皆毀謗
於未來世中    當同受惡報
是故應自護    莫以惡加彼
剎利具技藝    龍子及與火
比丘持淨戒    此四不可輕
為護己命故    謹慎應遠離

爾時波斯匿王聞此語已,其心戰慄,身毛為竪,即從坐起,偏袒右肩,合掌向佛,白佛言:

「世尊!我於今者實有過罪,自知毀犯。譬如 * 孾愚,狂癡無知,所作不善。唯願世尊憐愍我故,聽我懺悔!」

佛告波斯匿王言:

「我今愍汝,聽汝懺悔。」


時波斯匿王既蒙懺悔,心大歡喜,作禮而去。

如是我聞:一時佛在拘薩羅人間遊行,至舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。


時波斯匿王聞世尊拘薩羅人間遊行,至舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,聞已,往詣佛所,稽首佛足,退坐一面,白佛言:

「世尊!我聞世尊自記說成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。諸人傳者,得非虛妄過長說耶?為如說說,如法說,隨順法說耶?非是他人損同法者,於其問答生厭薄處耶?」

佛告大王:

「彼如是說,是真諦說,非為虛妄。如說說,如法說,隨順法說。非是他人損同法者,於其問答生厭薄處。所以者何?大王!我今實得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提故。」

波斯匿王白佛言:

「雖復世尊作如是說,我猶故不信。所以者何?此間有諸宿重沙門婆羅門,所謂:富蘭那迦葉、末迦利瞿舍梨子、刪闍耶毘羅胝子、阿耆多枳舍欽婆羅、迦羅拘陀迦栴延、尼乾陀若提子,彼等不自說言得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。何得世尊幼小年少,出家未久,而便自證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提?」

佛告大王:

「有四種雖小,而不可輕。何等為四?剎利王子年少幼小,而不可輕。龍子年少幼小,而不可輕。小火雖微,而不可輕。比丘幼小,而不可輕。」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

剎利形相具    貴族發名稱
雖復年幼稚    智者所不輕
此必居王位    顧念生怨害
是故難可輕    應生大恭敬
善求自護者    自護如護命
以平等自護    而等護於命
聚落及空處    見彼幼龍者
莫以小蛇故    而生輕慢想
雜色小龍形    亦應令安樂
輕蛇無士女    悉為毒所害
是故自護者    當如護己命
以斯善護己    而等護於彼
猛火之所食    雖小食無限
小燭亦能燒    足薪則彌廣
從微漸進燒    盡聚落城邑
是故自護者    當如護己命
以斯善護己    而等護於彼
盛火之所焚    百卉蕩燒盡
滅已不盈縮    戒火還復生
若輕毀比丘    受持淨戒火
燒身及子孫    眾災流百世
如燒多羅樹    無有生長期
是故當自護    如自護己命
以斯善自護    而等護於彼
剎利形相具    幼龍及小火
比丘具淨戒    不應起輕想
是故當自護    如自護己命
以斯善自護    而等護於彼


佛說此經已,波斯匿王聞佛所說,歡喜隨喜,作禮而去。

Daharasuttaṃ

Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “bhavampi no gotamo anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti paṭijānātī”ti? “Yañhi taṃ, mahārāja, sammā vadamāno vadeyya ‘anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddho’ti, mameva [var] taṃ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Ahañhi, mahārāja, anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddho”ti.

“Yepi te, bho gotama, samaṇabrāhmaṇā saṅghino gaṇino gaṇācariyā ñātā yasassino titthakarā sādhusammatā bahujanassa, seyyathidaṃ– pūraṇo kassapo, makkhali gosālo, nigaṇṭho nāṭaputto, sañcayo belaṭṭhaputto, pakudho kaccāyano, ajito kesakambalo; tepi mayā ‘anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti paṭijānāthā’ti puṭṭhā samānā anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti na paṭijānanti. Kiṃ pana bhavaṃ gotamo daharo ceva jātiyā navo ca pabbajjāyā”ti?

“Cattāro kho me, mahārāja, daharāti na uññātabbā, daharāti na paribhotabbā. Katame cattāro? Khattiyo kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Urago kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Aggi kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Bhikkhu, kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Ime kho, mahārāja, cattāro daharāti na uññātabbā, daharāti na paribhotabbā”ti.

Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṃ vatvāna sugato athāparaṃ etadavoca satthā–

“Khattiyaṃ jātisampannaṃ, abhijātaṃ yasassinaṃ;
daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
“Ṭhānañhi so manujindo, rajjaṃ laddhāna khattiyo;
so kuddho rājadaṇḍena, tasmiṃ pakkamate bhusaṃ;
tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
“Gāme vā yadi vā raññe, yattha passe bhujaṅgamaṃ;
daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
“Uccāvacehi vaṇṇehi, urago carati tejasī [var] ;
so āsajja ḍaṃse bālaṃ, naraṃ nāriñca ekadā;
tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
“Pahūtabhakkhaṃ jālinaṃ, pāvakaṃ kaṇhavattaniṃ;
daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
“Laddhā hi so upādānaṃ, mahā hutvāna pāvako;
so āsajja ḍahe [var] bālaṃ, naraṃ nāriñca ekadā;
tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
“Vanaṃ yadaggi ḍahati [var] , pāvako kaṇhavattanī;
jāyanti tattha pārohā, ahorattānamaccaye.
“Yañca kho sīlasampanno, bhikkhu ḍahati tejasā;
na tassa puttā pasavo, dāyādā vindare dhanaṃ;
anapaccā adāyādā, tālāvatthū bhavanti te.
“Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso, sampassaṃ atthamattano;
bhujaṅgamaṃ pāvakañca, khattiyañca yasassinaṃ;
bhikkhuñca sīlasampannaṃ, sammadeva samācare”ti.

Evaṃ vutte, rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ, bhante, abhikkantaṃ, bhante! Seyyathāpi bhante, nikkujjitaṃ [var] Vā ukkujjeyya paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya– ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṃ bhagavatā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ, bhante, bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ, bhante, bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti.
